Kyankwanzi, March 8, 2025 – The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) took center stage at the national International Women’s Day celebrations in Kyankwanzi District, impressing attendees with its innovative, gender-responsive agricultural technologies. Held under the theme “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” the event at Bukwiri C.O.U Primary School highlighted NARO’s efforts to empower women in agriculture.
NARO’s exhibition featured modern farm machinery designed to reduce labor intensity, biofortified crops rich in essential nutrients, and value-added agricultural products from coffee and cocoa. The showcase also included livestock health and nutrition solutions aimed at improving productivity and household incomes for women farmers.
Spearheading the event was NARO Governing Council Chairperson Kenneth Katungisa, alongside directors from key research institutes, including the National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI), National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NaRL), and the National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI), among others.
A major highlight was the demonstration of nutrient-rich crops such as biofortified maize and sweet potatoes, crucial in combating malnutrition among women and children. Additionally, improved livestock management practices, disease control measures, and climate-smart farming techniques were showcased to help women farmers increase yields and profitability.
Speaking at the event, Katungisa reaffirmed NARO’s commitment to supporting women in agriculture. “Empowering women in farming is essential for food security and economic growth. Our innovations are designed to make agriculture more efficient and rewarding for women,” he stated.
Women farmers at the event welcomed NARO’s solutions, particularly appreciating the introduction of farm machinery that reduces physical labor and the promotion of value-added agricultural products.
With the upcoming planting season approaching, NARO also provided expert advice on crop selection, pest and disease management, and sustainable farming techniques.
Prof. Samuel Majalija, Director of Research at NaLIRRI, reiterated NARO’s dedication to ensuring women have access to tools and knowledge that enhance their agricultural success.
As Uganda continues its push for gender equality, NARO’s innovations stand as a testament to how technology can transform the agricultural landscape for women, fostering resilience and economic independence.
