Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, alongside veteran activist Ingrid Turinawe and three other activists, has been granted bail after spending weeks on remand.
The group was arrested during a protest against the detention of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The activists, including Phiona Kyabayiza, Faridah Nangonzi, and Shadia Namubiru, were taken into custody following their participation in a demonstration demanding the release of Besigye.
The former presidential candidate and fierce government critic has been in detention over charges related to his political activism.
Their arrest sparked public outcry from human rights groups and opposition figures, who condemned what they described as a crackdown on dissent.
Supporters argue that the activists were merely exercising their constitutional right to protest.
After weeks behind bars, the court ruled in favor of their bail application, allowing them temporary freedom as they await further legal proceedings.
Their release was met with relief from their families and supporters, many of whom had been advocating for their release.
Despite their freedom, the activists remain defiant, vowing to continue their struggle for justice and democracy in Uganda.
More updates to follow as the case progresses.
