President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), is set to visit Kawempe North today, March 11, to rally support for the NRM candidate, Ms. Faridah Nambi, ahead of the by-election scheduled for March 13.
Museveni’s visit marks the climax of the NRM’s campaign efforts, which have been ongoing since March 1.
According to Ms. Rosemary Sseninde, the NRM Director in charge of Mobilisation, the President’s presence underscores the party’s commitment to reclaiming the parliamentary seat in Kawempe North.
“We are confident that with the support we have witnessed throughout our campaign, the people of Kawempe North are ready to embrace the NRM’s message of progress and service delivery. The President’s visit today is a significant boost to our efforts,” Ms. Sseninde stated.
The campaign event will take place at the Kawempe Mbogo Playground, where Museveni is expected to address NRM supporters, emphasizing the government’s achievements and future plans for the constituency.
His visit is anticipated to galvanize party supporters as they make their final push before election day.
The Kawempe North by-election was necessitated by the death of the former legislator, Mohammad Ssegirinya, on January 9.
With 10 candidates in the race, the competition has been particularly fierce between NUP’s Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola and NRM’s Faridah Nambi.
While opposition leaders, including NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi and People’s Front for Transition (PFT) figures, have been actively rallying for Nalukoola, the NRM has also intensified its campaign.
On March 10, Nambi campaigned alongside Uganda’s Prime Minister, Ms. Robinah Nabanja, and NRM’s first National Chairman, Moses Kigongo, in Komamboga and Kikaaya.
As tensions rise across different political camps, Museveni’s presence in Kawempe North is expected to further energize the NRM supporters and potentially sway undecided voters.
The by-election’s outcome will determine who takes over from Ssegirinya in Parliament, with polling set for Thursday, March 13.
