Masaka Chief Magistrate Abudallah Kayiza has remanded three civilian bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, to Masaka Main Prison on charges of robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property.
The accused—Achileo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya, and Grace Wakabi Smart—appeared before the court, where they were read six counts, including aggravated robbery, simple robbery, and assault.
The prosecution alleges that on May 18, 2024, the trio attacked and robbed a female journalist, Ms. Margret Kayondo of Radio Simba, stealing her green sweater and a Camon12 mobile phone valued at Shs730,000.
Court records indicate that the suspects used sharp knives and sticks during the attack. Additionally, they allegedly assaulted another journalist, Ms. Zainab Namusaazi of Next Media Group, in a scuffle that resulted in the destruction of her video camera, worth Shs1.5 million.
The altercation reportedly took place at Manja Village in Kisekka Sub County, Lwengo District, during the funeral of UK-based businessman Pascal Ssekasamba.
Witnesses claim that the bodyguards tried to prevent journalists from covering the event, leading to the confrontation.
Further allegations state that the trio also robbed Shs200,000 from two individuals, Rodgers Mulungi and John Mukalaazi, and assaulted Drake Lubega and Haruna Ssekitto, whose mobile phones were also stolen.
State prosecutor Mr. Michael Wakosesa informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and requested an adjournment. Magistrate Kayiza granted the request, scheduling the next hearing for March 28, 2025.
One of the defense lawyers, Mr. Samuel Muyiizi, criticized the prosecution for lacking sufficient evidence and prolonging the case. He argued that the incident occurred last year, yet investigations remain incomplete.
With the case now adjourned, Kivumbi, Mugumya, and Wakabi Smart will remain in custody until their next court appearance.
