National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has strongly criticized the government for closing Pearl FM radio station.
The station was switched off the air for allegedly discussing the rigging of elections in Kawempe North, despite overwhelming evidence of electoral manipulation by the regime.
Bobi Wine described the government’s actions as those of a “criminal regime” that seeks to silence the media and suppress freedom of speech.
He noted that the closure of Pearl FM is an extension of the regime’s attack on the media, which has seen journalists brutally assaulted and their equipment destroyed.
Pearl FM is a popular radio station, especially among Uganda’s Muslim community, and plays a significant role in broadcasting Islamic teachings and prayers during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Bobi Wine expressed outrage that Gen. Museveni’s government would use the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to block the station during this sacred period.
“We strongly condemn the attack on the media and demand that Pearl FM be reopened immediately,” Bobi Wine stated. This incident is the latest in a series of government actions aimed at stifling dissent and suppressing freedom of expression in Uganda.
