Masaka, Uganda – Equity Bank has reinforced its commitment to empowering women in micro-business through its Abakyala Ku Ntiiko initiative, which recently held its second edition in Masaka.
The event provided a platform for women from various sectors to discuss work-life balance, financial literacy, and strategies for business growth.
A highlight of the event was an engaging panel discussion featuring prominent women entrepreneurs and professionals who shared practical insights on balancing careers, businesses, and family responsibilities.
Empowering Women Through Knowledge and Networking
Panelists emphasized the importance of proper financial management, accountability, and saving culture as essential pillars for business sustainability.
They also advised women to conduct thorough background checks before hiring staff to ensure efficiency and trust in both business and home settings.
“You have to know the people you hire as staff because they can either fail or lift your business. Create a mutual professional relationship with them and understand their needs to achieve your business goals,” said Dr. Olive Nabirye, a businesswoman and employee of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Masaka.
Inspiration from Successful Women
The event also showcased inspiring stories of women who have transformed their careers into thriving businesses.
Mrs. Kellen Nampurira, CEO of Zebra Hotel, shared her journey from working in a bakery to owning one of Masaka’s biggest hotels, encouraging women to embrace patience and consistency.
District Police Commander Jessica Naawe highlighted the importance of group savings, stating, “If you are engaged in business or employment and not relying on handouts, life becomes easier.
I balance my career in the police force, family, and my livestock business while ensuring I get rest and set boundaries.”
Equity Bank’s Commitment to Women’s Economic Growth
The event follows the successful launch of Abakyala Ku Ntiiko’s second edition in Kampala earlier this month.
Equity Bank Masaka Branch Manager Darius Tumwesigire reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to providing financial tools and opportunities tailored for women in business.
“We are here to serve women and provide them with the financial tools they need to grow their businesses,” Tumwesigire said.
Equity Bank introduced various financing options, including the EquiMama product, which offers financial support along with health insurance. Florence Bukko Nakku, a Micro Banking Officer at Equity Bank, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating,
“With EquiMama, women not only get financial support but also health coverage, ensuring they stay strong and focused on their businesses.”
The Abakyala Ku Ntiiko initiative continues to empower women through financial literacy, access to capital, and networking opportunities, helping them thrive in business and beyond.
