In a decisive push for stability in the war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi met in Doha for high-level peace talks, hosted by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The trilateral summit, held on Tuesday, was part of Qatar’s efforts to ease tensions in the region.
Kagame and Tshisekedi, whose countries have long been at odds over security concerns and rebel activities, reaffirmed their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as previously agreed at the EAC-SADC summit in Tanzania on February 8, 2025.
The leaders also welcomed the progress made through the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes, now merged into a unified approach to resolving the crisis.
They agreed on the need to continue discussions initiated in Doha to establish a strong foundation for lasting peace in eastern Congo.
Expressing gratitude to Qatar for its hospitality and diplomatic efforts, Kagame and Tshisekedi acknowledged the significance of this meeting in fostering confidence in a shared commitment to regional security.
Qatar’s role in facilitating dialogue underscores its growing influence in global conflict resolution.
As the world watches, the question remains—will this renewed commitment translate into real progress for the people of eastern Congo?
The next steps in the peace process will be crucial in determining whether this meeting marks a turning point in the long-standing conflict.
