Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has sparked outrage after telling a voter who expressed regret over electing him to “go ahead and hang yourself.”
Baryomunsi, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East Constituency in Kanungu District, made the controversial remark in a community WhatsApp group named “ESAU & FRIENDS.”
The group, which is administered by one of his personal assistants, Esau, serves as a platform for communication between the MP and his constituents.
The comment came in response to a voter who voiced dissatisfaction with his performance as an MP. Instead of addressing the concerns raised, Baryomunsi responded with the harsh remark, triggering backlash from members of the group and beyond.
The statement has drawn widespread criticism, with many condemning it as insensitive and unbecoming of a leader. Civil society groups and opposition politicians have called for an apology, arguing that public officials should be more accountable and respectful to their constituents.
“This is a shocking and unacceptable statement from a leader who is supposed to represent the interests of his people,” said a political analyst. “Such remarks discourage political engagement and undermine democracy.”
Screenshots of Baryomunsi’s remarks have been widely shared on social media, fueling debate on the conduct of public officials and their attitudes toward voters. Many have called on the minister to retract his statement and issue a public apology.
Attempts to reach Baryomunsi for clarification were unsuccessful. It remains to be seen whether he will face any political consequences for his remarks.
