Uganda Airlines has officially announced the launch of its long-awaited direct flights to London Gatwick, marking a pivotal moment in the airline’s expansion into the European market.
Beginning May 18, 2025, the national carrier will operate four weekly non-stop flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing global connectivity.
This development is a major milestone for Uganda Airlines, coinciding with the airline’s fifth anniversary.
The addition of the London route signals the culmination of its establishment phase and the commencement of an ambitious long-term growth strategy.
The airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki, emphasized that the route has been meticulously planned and strategically positioned to strengthen trade, tourism, and economic ties between Uganda and the United Kingdom.
“This route marks the end of our establishment phase and sets us on the course for long-term growth and expansion,” Ms. Bamuturaki stated.
“Despite facing setbacks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global aviation, we are proud to finally launch this crucial air bridge.”
The introduction of direct flights to London comes at a time when Uganda is positioning itself as a key player in regional and international aviation.
The airline, which currently operates flights to 14 African cities, sees this new long-haul route as a strategic move to integrate Entebbe into global aviation networks.
The UK remains one of Uganda’s most significant trade and tourism partners, and the re-establishment of direct flights after nearly a decade is expected to yield substantial economic benefits.
Boosting Trade, Tourism, and Connectivity
The direct link to London is expected to significantly boost Uganda’s export sector. According to the Grant Thornton Wings of Opportunity report (2024), Uganda’s exports to the UK were valued at $22.6 million last year.
The Airbus A330-800neo, which will service the route, offers robust cargo capacity, making it a game-changer for exporters of fresh produce and other goods seeking efficient transport to the UK market.
Additionally, Uganda Airlines’ expanded network will enhance tourism by providing a seamless travel experience for British visitors exploring Uganda’s renowned natural wonders.
The UK has traditionally been a key source of inbound tourism, and the airline anticipates increased passenger traffic from London to destinations across East and Central Africa.
“We are confident that our cargo capacity and network expansion will support the rapid growth of Uganda’s exports to the UK,” Ms. Bamuturaki noted.
“At the same time, this direct route will make it easier for tourists and business travelers to visit Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.”
The schedule has been designed with traveler convenience in mind. The flight times are optimized to ensure smooth onward connections to key European and North American destinations while also facilitating easy transfers within Uganda Airlines’ African network, which includes cities such as Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, Kinshasa, and soon Accra.
Enhancing Uganda Airlines’ Global Presence
Uganda Airlines has steadily grown its presence in Africa since its relaunch in 2019.
With an average of 77 departures per week, it is now the largest operator out of Entebbe International Airport, accounting for nearly 25% of scheduled departures.
The new London route will further strengthen its position, increasing the airline’s weekly departures to 81.
The Airbus A330-800neo, which will service the route, is a state-of-the-art aircraft featuring a three-class configuration—Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class—offering passengers a superior travel experience with unparalleled comfort and cutting-edge in-flight amenities.
“This route elevates Uganda Airlines’ international profile and strategically positions us to tap deeper into the global aviation market,” the CEO added.
“The success of this route will boost our revenues and support further expansion and operational sustainability.”
Government and Industry Support
The launch of this route has been made possible through the concerted efforts of Uganda Airlines, government agencies, and international partners.
The Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Wamala-Katumba, along with the Minister of Finance, Hon. Matia Kasaijja, have played instrumental roles in supporting the airline’s growth.
The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has also provided critical regulatory support to facilitate the airline’s international operations.
Uganda Airlines also acknowledged the significant support from the British High Commission in ensuring that the necessary foreign carrier permits and approvals were obtained efficiently.
This collaboration highlights the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Uganda and the UK.
Tickets for the new Entebbe-London Gatwick route are now available for booking through Uganda Airlines’ official website, mobile app, booking offices, and authorized travel agents.
As Uganda Airlines embarks on this new journey, the airline looks forward to welcoming passengers aboard and showcasing the warmth and hospitality that define Ugandan air travel.
With a young, modern fleet and a commitment to operational excellence, Uganda Airlines continues to make significant strides toward positioning Entebbe as a key aviation hub in East Africa.
