Kampala police have arrested two men in connection with the suspected poisoning and subsequent death of a 23-year-old woman at Mezo Noir, a popular nightclub in the city.
Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the club, and his brother Joseph Kalenzi aka Dj Spinny were taken into custody at Kira Road Police Station following the mysterious collapse and death of Martha Ahumuza Murari.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the arrests on Friday, March 21, 2025, stating that the two suspects were being detained to assist in investigations.
“The victim met her friend, Edward Mugabo, at around 2 a.m., and they drank together until 3:30 a.m. before moving to the manager’s office, which has no CCTV cameras. It was inside this office that she reportedly collapsed,” Onyango said.
Mugabo then alerted his brother, Kalenzi, and the two rushed Ahumuza to Kampala Hospital, where she was placed on life support. However, she later succumbed.

With questions surrounding the circumstances of her death, authorities moved swiftly to detain the two brothers. “They are currently being held as investigations continue,” Onyango added.
The arrests come just hours after Mezo Noir announced a temporary closure, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” The management did not provide further details but assured patrons that a reopening date would be communicated soon.
Meanwhile, Ahumuza’s family has arranged a vigil for this evening. Her funeral service will be held at All Saints Church Kampala tomorrow, March 23, before she is laid to rest in Nyarubanga, Mbarara.
Police have urged the public to remain patient as investigations unfold.
