The government of Uganda has officially secured funding for the construction of a new bridge at Karuma, a crucial infrastructure project that is expected to boost transportation and trade in the region.
This development follows the signing of a grant agreement between the Ugandan Minister of Finance and the Japanese Ambassador, securing JPY19.988 billion (approximately UGX488.32 billion) in financing for the project.
The new Karuma Bridge, which will replace the existing aging infrastructure, is set to be a vital transportation link along Uganda’s major highway network, connecting northern Uganda to the capital, Kampala.
The project is expected to enhance economic activities, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and improve overall road safety in the region.
According to Isaac Wani, the Head of Network Planning and Engineering at the Ministry of Works, construction of the bridge is scheduled to commence in June 2026 and will take approximately four years to complete.
This means that if all goes according to plan, the bridge will be operational by mid-2030.
Importance of the New Karuma Bridge
The Karuma area is strategically located along the Kampala-Gulu highway, a major route linking Uganda to South Sudan and other East African countries.
The current bridge, which has been in place for several decades, has faced significant wear and tear, raising concerns about its long-term viability.
Heavy commercial traffic, coupled with increasing economic activities in the region, has necessitated the construction of a more modern and resilient structure.

The new bridge is expected to support Uganda’s Vision 2040, which aims to improve infrastructure and economic growth through enhanced transport networks.
The government believes that with better road and bridge infrastructure, businesses will thrive, agricultural produce will reach markets faster, and overall trade efficiency will improve.
Japanese Government’s Commitment to Ugandan Development
The Japanese government has been a long-term development partner of Uganda, supporting several key infrastructure projects over the years.
The latest grant is part of Japan’s commitment to enhancing Uganda’s transport sector and boosting regional integration.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to supporting Uganda’s infrastructure expansion.

The funding provided under this agreement will cover the design, construction, and supervision of the project, ensuring that high engineering standards are met.
Additionally, Japanese expertise in bridge construction is expected to bring cutting-edge technology and efficiency to the project.
Impact on Trade and Economic Growth
The new Karuma Bridge is expected to have a significant economic impact, particularly for businesses and communities in northern Uganda.
Improved infrastructure will not only reduce transportation costs but also encourage investment in the region.
Business owners and transport operators have welcomed the development, citing the current challenges they face due to the aging bridge.
Many heavy-duty transporters who rely on the highway for cross-border trade have often complained about delays and structural weaknesses in the existing bridge.
With a new and modern bridge in place, efficiency in logistics and supply chains will be greatly enhanced.
Furthermore, the project is expected to create numerous job opportunities for Ugandans during the construction phase.
Local engineers, construction workers, and suppliers will be engaged, thereby injecting income into the economy and supporting livelihoods.
What’s Next?
With the grant agreement now in place, the Ministry of Works and Transport is expected to begin preparatory activities, including environmental assessments, project design, and procurement of contractors.
The government has assured Ugandans that transparency will be upheld in the implementation of the project, ensuring that funds are used effectively to deliver quality infrastructure.
As Uganda moves closer to the official groundbreaking in June 2026, stakeholders remain optimistic that the new Karuma Bridge will transform the transport landscape, drive economic growth, and strengthen Uganda’s connectivity with its neighbors.
The construction of the new Karuma Bridge is a major milestone in Uganda’s infrastructure development agenda. With Japan’s support, the government is set to deliver a modern bridge that will serve generations to come.
As the project unfolds, Ugandans eagerly anticipate the benefits it will bring, from smoother transportation to increased economic opportunities.
For now, all eyes are on the preparations leading up to 2026, as the nation gears up for yet another transformative development in its road network.
