Heavy rains early this morning wreaked havoc across Kampala, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of at least five people.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police, alongside the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, responded to numerous emergency calls as the city grappled with severe flooding that swept away pedestrians, caused motor accidents, and led to significant property damage.
Among the deceased are two young children, Otim Kisa Eliza, aged three, and Ochaka Chon, an 11-month-old infant.
The siblings drowned inside their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto, after being left locked in the house by their mother, Lenunu Rose Mary.
Preliminary investigations suggest that this was a habitual practice, prompting Kira Road Police to arrest Lenunu on charges of negligence following distressing accounts from neighbors.
“This is a heartbreaking incident. Leaving children unattended in such conditions is extremely dangerous,” said an officer from Kira Road Police. “We urge parents to always ensure their children’s safety, especially during extreme weather conditions.”
Three other victims were recovered from the Kinawataka area, though authorities are still working to identify them.
Their tragic deaths underscore the deadly force of the floods that inundated the city’s roads and residential areas.
“Our rescue teams are on the ground, working tirelessly to assist those affected,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan. “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
Rescue teams remain on-site, assessing the damage and providing aid to affected residents.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution during heavy rains by avoiding unnecessary movement, securing their homes, and ensuring children’s safety.
Boda boda riders have been strongly advised against crossing flooded roads until water levels subside.
“The public must remain vigilant,” Owoyesigyire added. “We urge residents to take extra precautions and report any emergencies promptly.”
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for postmortem examinations.
As investigations continue, officials emphasize the need for heightened vigilance during the ongoing rainy season.
This latest disaster serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by residents in flood-prone areas, sparking renewed calls for improved drainage infrastructure and community awareness to prevent further tragedies.
