KAMPALA, Uganda — Mezo Noir, a renowned high-end nightclub situated in Kampala’s upscale Kololo suburb, has reopened after a temporary closure prompted by the untimely death of a patron, Martha Ahumuza Murari.
The 23-year-old collapsed at the venue on March 19, 2025, leading to widespread speculation and an intensive police investigation.
Mezo Noir will officially serve their clients again next week on their popular theme night Girls in the City
The Incident
On the night of March 19, Martha met with Edward Mugabo, a cashier at Mezo Noir, around 2 a.m. The two consumed alcoholic beverages together until approximately 3:30 a.m., after which they moved to the manager’s office—a location notably lacking CCTV surveillance.
It was within this office that Martha suddenly collapsed. In a state of panic, Mugabo contacted his brother, Joseph Kalenzi, and together they transported Martha to Kampala Hospital. Despite being placed on life support, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Initial Speculations and Arrests
In the immediate aftermath, rumors swirled that Martha’s drink had been spiked, leading to her sudden deterioration.
These suspicions resulted in the arrest of Mugabo and Kalenzi, who were detained at Kira Road Police Station to assist with the investigation.
Autopsy Findings
Contrary to the initial theories of foul play, a preliminary autopsy report revealed that Martha died from a ruptured aneurysm—a condition where a weakened blood vessel bursts, causing fatal internal bleeding.
This finding effectively ruled out the earlier allegations of drink spiking or poisoning.
Family’s Response and Public Reaction
Martha’s family has expressed deep concern over the spread of misinformation regarding her death. They have urged the public and media outlets to refrain from speculation and to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
The incident has ignited a broader conversation about safety protocols within Kampala’s nightlife scene.
Patrons are calling for increased security measures, including comprehensive CCTV coverage and stricter monitoring of beverage handling, to ensure the well-being of all customers.
Mezo Noir’s Temporary Closure and Reopening
In response to the tragedy, Mezo Noir announced an immediate temporary closure, citing “unforeseen circumstances.”
The management expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured patrons that a reopening date would be communicated in due course.
After cooperating fully with authorities and implementing enhanced safety measures, Mezo Noir has reopened.
The management has reportedly upgraded surveillance systems and reinforced staff training to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The reopening of Mezo Noir marks a significant moment for Kampala’s nightlife community.
While the club resumes operations, the memory of Martha Ahumuza Murari serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of health awareness and safety in social settings.
The incident has spurred both patrons and establishments to prioritize well-being, ensuring that nightlife remains both vibrant and secure for all.
