Addis Ababa, April 3, 2025 – The Fourth Session of the Ethiopia-Uganda Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) has officially commenced in Addis Ababa, marking a significant revival of diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations after a six-year hiatus.
Held at the Skylight Hotel from April 3-4, the session brings together high-level delegations led by Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, alongside Ethiopian officials. The discussions focus on key areas including trade, investment, transport, immigration, energy, and security.
Speaking at the opening, Ambassador Richard Kabonero, representing Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations. “These engagements highlight Uganda’s dedication to fostering bilateral cooperation and advancing shared interests, including economic partnerships and peace initiatives,” he stated.
Ambassador Zerinu Abebe, Ethiopia’s Acting Director-General for African Affairs, echoed the sentiment, underlining the importance of strengthening existing collaborations and exploring new avenues for cooperation. Meanwhile, Uganda’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Rebecca Amuge Otengo, stressed the need for regular JMC sessions to ensure the effective implementation of agreements.
The meeting is structured around three key clusters: political and diplomatic affairs, defense and security cooperation, and economic development. Delegates aim to address trade barriers, market access, and immigration challenges to enhance mutual benefits.
Both nations have expressed optimism that the JMC will lead to strengthened partnerships and concrete agreements, reinforcing their commitment to regional stability and economic progress.
