A devastating road accident on the Iganga-Tororo Highway claimed the lives of 13 people last night, according to a statement issued by Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety spokesperson SP Michael Kananura.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. on April 6, 2025, and involved three vehicles: a Toyota Hiace (registration UBQ 772A), a trailer (registration KBM 157S ZF 3160, M/Benz), and an unidentified motorcycle.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle, which was attempting to overtake, lost control while traveling in the opposite direction.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, the trailer driver swerved, causing the container it was carrying to dislodge and fall onto the Toyota Hiace.
Ten people, including the Hiace driver, died instantly as the container crushed the vehicle.
The container continued to roll after the initial impact, killing two more individuals believed to be the motorcycle rider and a passenger.
Another Hiace passenger succumbed to injuries later, bringing the death toll to 13.
Six others sustained injuries in the accident, including the driver of the trailer. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
SP Kananura urged all road users to exercise greater caution when overtaking and emphasized the importance of securely fastening containers to prevent similar tragedies.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased,” he said. “We continue to call upon motorists to drive responsibly and ensure all cargo is properly secured.”
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers on Uganda’s roads and the need for vigilance from all road users.
