Former Karamoja Affairs Minister Agnes Nandutu burst into tears in court yesterday, begging for mercy as she pleaded for a break in her trial to seek urgent medical treatment.
The Bududa Woman MP, who is battling charges in the high-profile Karamoja ironsheets scandal, was visibly weak and emotional as she stood before Justice Jane Kajuga Okuo at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala. Her tearful plea brought courtroom proceedings to a dramatic standstill.
“I’m really sick, my lord… not like malaria,” she cried. “I cannot proceed… I pray to finish my medication.”
Nandutu, who is accused of unlawfully receiving 2,000 pre-painted iron sheets meant for vulnerable communities in Karamoja, struggled to compose herself as she requested a private audience with the judge to explain her condition confidentially.
Her legal team, led by Caleb Alaka, presented medical records from Nakasero Hospital, citing swollen legs and breathing difficulties. But lead prosecutor David Bisamunyu rejected the request, accusing the defense of stalling the trial.
Justice Okuo, unmoved by the emotional appeal for a private meeting, ordered a new medical investigation and adjourned the case until May 5.
Nandutu’s courtroom breakdown adds a dramatic twist to the ongoing saga surrounding the mismanagement of aid meant for one of Uganda’s poorest regions.
