Uganda’s roads just got a lot stricter. The Traffic and Road Safety (Speed Limit) Regulations 2024 are now officially in effect, bringing with them tougher fines for drivers who break speed limits.
Under the new regulations, motorists caught exceeding the speed limit by 10 to 30 kilometers per hour will face a fine of UGX 200,000.
Those who go over the limit by more than 30 kilometers per hour will be slapped with a much steeper penalty—UGX 600,000.
This marks a sharp increase from previous fines. For instance, drivers speeding at 100km/h on the Northern Bypass—where the limit is 70km/h—or at over 60km/h on the Lugogo Bypass—where the limit is just 30km/h—will now be liable to pay 30 currency points, up from the previous 10.
Authorities say the new penalties are designed to improve compliance and reduce the number of accidents caused by speeding, a major contributor to road fatalities in the country.
“Let’s keep the roads safe—and your money where it belongs,” reads the government’s public advisory, urging all road users to drive responsibly.
Drivers are advised to pay close attention to posted speed limits and adjust accordingly to avoid hefty fines—and to help keep Uganda’s roads safer for everyone.
