MTN Uganda has announced a significant contribution of UGX 50.55 billion to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), representing 2% of its gross annual revenue in fulfillment of its licensing obligations.
The amount, up from UGX 42.5 billion last year, marks a notable increase and reflects the growing strength of the telecom sector in Uganda.
All licensed telecommunications operators in Uganda are mandated to contribute 2% of their gross annual revenue to the UCC. Of this, 1% is remitted to the Consolidated Fund, while the remaining 1% supports the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund.
The fund plays a pivotal role in enabling the government to extend essential communication services to underserved and unserved regions across the country.
While receiving the cheque, UCC Executive Director, Hon Nyombi Thembo, commended MTN Uganda for its consistent and timely compliance with this regulatory requirement.
“We commend MTN Uganda for meeting this obligation in good spirit, consistently and on time,” said Hon Nyombi Thembo
“The increase in the contribution year after year is a clear signal that the telecom sector is thriving. This is thanks in part to the enabling legal, policy, and regulatory environment championed by the Government of Uganda.”
Speaking at the event, MTN Uganda CEO, Sylvia Mulinge, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital inclusion and national development.
“At MTN Uganda, we believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life,” said Ms. Mulinge.
“This contribution is part of our broader strategy to support the transformation of Uganda into a fully digital economy—not only by investing in infrastructure but also by enabling affordability, access, and digital skills.”
The growing contributions from MTN and other operators underscore the telecom sector’s vital role in national development and the importance of collaborative efforts between the private sector and government in achieving Uganda’s digital transformation goals.
