Airtel Uganda has officially paid UGX 37.9 billion to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), fulfilling the 2% annual gross revenue levy required of all licensed telecom operators as part of their regulatory obligations.
The announcement was made by Airtel Uganda Managing Director, Mr. Soumendra Sahu, who attributed the company’s ability to meet this requirement to the loyalty of its customers, strong government support, and collaboration with development partners.
“We are proud to honour this obligation, which reflects our commitment to Uganda’s digital growth,” said Mr. Sahu. “As we look ahead, we urge stakeholders to work together to boost smartphone penetration and digital literacy, so that the benefits of technology can reach every Ugandan.”
The UGX 37.9 billion contribution is part of a broader framework under which telecom companies support national ICT development goals.
Mr. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of UCC, welcomed the payment and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to using the funds to promote inclusive and strategic ICT growth.
“These funds are critical to powering national priorities,” Mr. Thembo said.
“We will continue to channel them into expanding ICT infrastructure in underserved areas, supporting ICT in education and agriculture, enabling digital inclusion for persons with disabilities, promoting digital skills, supporting research and innovation, and distributing free smart devices to marginalized communities.”
The announcement underscores the role of public-private collaboration in advancing Uganda’s digital transformation agenda.
