The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has officially gazetted the application by promoters of the People’s Front For Freedom (PFF) to register as a political party, in accordance with the provisions of the Political Parties and Organizations Act.
PFF was formed following a split within the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), after factions of the party accused current leaders—President Amuriat Oboi Patrick and Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi—of accepting money from President Yoweri Museveni, which was allegedly used in the 2021 elections.
Since the split, the FDC has been divided into two factions: one based at Katonga Road in Kampala, supported by Kizza Besigye, and the other based at Najjanankumbi. The Katonga faction, led by Elias Lukwago, now aims to establish a new political party, the PFF.
EC Announces Public Objections
The Electoral Commission, responsible for regulating political parties, has issued a notice in The Uganda Gazette inviting the public to submit any objections to the registration of PFF within 14 days.
In the notice signed by EC Chairman Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the commission stated:
“Any person who has grounds to oppose this application should do so within 14 days from the date of this Gazette notice by lodging an objection with the Electoral Commission.”
Background of the Formation
The PFF emerged after a faction of the FDC, led by Dr. Kizza Besigye, split from the main party. This faction accused current leadership—President Amuriat and Mafabi—of accepting significant funds from Museveni during the last general elections.
Elias Lukwago was appointed interim president of this faction, which has been seeking to register as a new party. Lukwago previously criticized EC delays, arguing that slow registration was hampering their preparedness for the 2026 elections.
Recently, Lukwago confirmed that all requirements for registration have been met, and they are now awaiting EC approval. If successful, PFF will become the third political party to split from the FDC, joining:
- Uganda Federal Alliance, led by Beti Kamya (former Minister and now Inspector General of Government)
- Alliance for National Transformation, led by Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu (former party president)
