Three civil servants, who were last year convicted of Shs120 million fraud, have been re-appointed to various positions in Jinja city, despite the Solicitor General’s advice that they should have been dismissed from office. Samuel Maali (the principal human resource officer), Ronald Elijah Kafifi (principal treasurer) and Jemima Mirembe (senior assistant accountant) were on April 5, 2022, convicted of conspiracy to defraud by the Anti-Corruption Court’s Chief Magistrate, Joan Aciro, after they pleaded guilty to the offence. Security officers arrested at least four nude anti-corruption protesters near the Ugandan parliament on Monday afternoon, according to eyewitnesses. The young female protesters, who were completely nude with their breasts painted in the colors of the Ugandan flag, carried placards condemning corruption and calling for the resignation of Parliament Speaker Anita Among. Ugandan security forces have increased their presence in urban areas after receiving terror alerts from the United States Embassy and United Nations agencies. The alerts, which were confirmed by the Ugandan police, are intended to prevent potential terrorist attacks as the U.S. marks the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York, which claimed 2,750 lives. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has urged the Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, to seek a supplementary budget for the resettlement and compensation of individuals affected by the Karuma Hydropower Project. The proposed budget to resettle 119 displaced persons is Shs28 billion, with Shs4.2 billion earmarked for compensation. “We cannot afford to wait until the 2024/2025 budget; this is an urgent matter. Tom Ssekamwa, who was travelling with Czech citizen and travel vlogger Lukas Slavik, was detained in Zimbabwe for 23 days. The pair had earlier recorded a video highlighting issues such as the lack of electricity and water at their hotel in Masvingo, which may have contributed to their arrest. In a devastating road accident early Wednesday morning, ten people lost their lives, and several others were injured at Kaihura Trading Center along the Fort Portal-Kyenjojo road.
