At least 86 people have known to have died after a ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, officials say. It is feared that more than 200 people may have drowned. Recovery efforts have resumed after being halted overnight. The MV Nyerere ferry overturned near the shore between the islands of Ukara and Bugolora. It is thought the overloaded vessel tipped over when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked. Local media say the ferry’s official capacity was 100 people but officials say the vessel was carrying more than 400 passengers when it capsized.…
Scores are feared after MV Nyerere, a Tanzanian ferry sunk in Lake Victoria today afternoon. The ferry which plies Bugorora to Ukara island route in Mwanza Province is said to have sunk with over 100 people aboard. Tanzanian security forces working alongside the public have launched search and rescue operations following the accident. Security minister Gen Elly Tumwine has blamed the deteriorating quality of debate at Parliament on multiparty political dispensation. The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has issued a directive barring the expansion of Kyangwali refugee camp in Hoima district. Kadaga said that plans to expand the camp should not continue until the Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, presents a statement to Parliament next week following allegations that his office is unlawfully evicting residents within the settlement. “If the Prime Minister is trying to take our land, let him come here and explain; let him tell us that he is determined to give land to refugees against Ugandans,” said Kadaga. Ntungamo municipality Member of Parliament Gerald Karuhanga says his life is in danger after receiving threatening messages. Kauhanga says he got the message from an MTN line saying he is next to be killed in the recent wave of murders. The Uganda Police Force has rubbished claims that they arrested the Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu just moments after he landed at Entebbe International Airport.
