The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has formally arrested Igara County MP Michael Mawanda. Mawanda appeared at the CID headquarters in Kibuli on Wednesday, where detectives questioned him about his alleged involvement in the financial mismanagement of war loss compensation funds paid to cooperatives. The Police have arrested eight people, including the suspected kingpin behind the forgery of land titles, transcripts, birth certificates and currencies. During an operation carried out by the Directorate of Crime Intelligence led by Brig. Gen. Christopher Ddamulira, operatives arrested Ronald Mukasa, 42, who is said to be the leader of the racket. The State Minister for Privatisation and Investment, Ms. Evelyn Anite, has ordered the top management of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to return Shs545m they awarded themselves as “honoraria payments” from the loan-funded Kampala Industrial Park Development (KIPD) project.
