At least 13 people perish on Uganda’s roads due to accidents, while about 35 more get injured daily, the Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, has said. “Those who survive with permanent injuries are more than those who die,” he said, appealing to motorists to exercise caution and utmost discipline while driving to protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. “Last year, we lost about 4,806 people in road crashes, and out of these, 60% were youth,” Kananura said. The Government has decried the actions of some households around Kampala and Wakiso districts that have undermined the 2024 national population census agenda. The trade ministry permanent secretary, Geraldine Ssali, finds herself in yet another scandal after she, together with her bodyguard, allegedly assaulted the ministry’s senior legal officer, Sandra Aneno. The fracas between Ssali and Aneno took place on Friday evening at the ministry’s head offices at Farmers’ House on Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala. Ssali immediately interdicted Aneno, accusing her of unbecoming behaviour. Aneno reported the case at the Kampala Central Police Station. Ugandan private sector firms have registered a deterioration in business conditions during March, thereby ending a 16-month upward improvement sequence in the health of the private sector. The authorities in Ivory Coast’s biggest city, Abidjan, have announced a ban on begging to try to combat what they call urban disorder. The city’s Deputy Governor, Vincent N’cho Kouaoh, said begging in all its forms – including the use of handcarts – was forbidden to improve people’s living conditions, ensure their safety and improve traffic flow.
