MTN Uganda, through its charitable arm, the MTN Foundation, has announced a significant contribution to Faces Up Uganda, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing psychosocial support and empowerment of Ugandan youth. The contribution, valued at UGX 20 million, includes five industrial and manual sewing machines, five desktop computers, an Epson sublimation printer, and unlimited internet connectivity for one year. The authorities in Ivory Coast’s biggest city, Abidjan, have announced a ban on begging to try to combat what they call urban disorder. The city’s Deputy Governor, Vincent N’cho Kouaoh, said begging in all its forms – including the use of handcarts – was forbidden to improve people’s living conditions, ensure their safety and improve traffic flow. In 2013, the interior ministry prohibited begging at street junctions, but it failed to curb the practice. Attempts in other African cities have also resulted in a similar lack of success. Ugandan private sector firms have registered a deterioration in business conditions during March, thereby ending a 16-month upward improvement sequence in the health of the private sector. The overall decline was driven by renewed contractions in output and new orders, as customer demand was reportedly hampered by less money in circulation and reduced purchasing power. Nonetheless, firms remained confident that business activity will increase over the next months, with employment and input buying rising further. Uganda’s First 5G Network, Airtel Uganda has today handed over a cheque totaling Ugx. 34.8 billion which is 2% of the annual gross revenue for the year ending 2023 to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to support with the country’s communication infrastructure development. The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the UCC offices. Mozambique’s agriculture ministry has banned the import of dog breeds considered to be dangerous. The decision is aimed at combatting the numerous dog attacks that have been reported all over the Southern African country. Dog bites are common in Mozambique. In the first half of last year, around 9,000 people were bitten, a reduction of 21% from 2022. Some of the attacks have ended in serious injuries, amputations and even death. The ban affects 26 breeds, including pit bulls, Rottweilers, bull terriers, bullmastiffs, German Shepherds, and Boerboels. The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, has asked the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and the Attorney General to investigate claims of land grabbing and fraudulent issuance of land titles in Agago district. Tayebwa gave the directive during following a petition by aggrieved community members of Lapono sub-county, presented by area MP, Hon. The Anti-Homosexuality Act, of 2023, has been the target of challenges, but the Ugandan Constitutional Court has dismissed them. At the Constitutional Court in Kampala on Wednesday morning, the judges under the direction of Deputy Chief Justice Richard Butera issued a decision that stated, “We decline to nullify the AHA 2023 in its entirety.” Butera said that the five-member court reached a unanimous decision.
