Uganda’s private sector continues to thrive despite higher utility, rent, material, and staff costs, according to the latest Stanbic Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The PMI dipped from 54.1 in May to 51.9 in June, indicating continued growth but at a slower pace. “The private sector in Uganda is showing remarkable resilience in the face of rising costs,” said Christopher Legilisho, Economist at Stanbic Bank. “The strong demand conditions are driving output and employment growth, and businesses are optimistic about the future,” he added. Over 10 labour export firms have vanished with 10,000 passports belonging to Ugandans seeking work abroad, the internal affairs ministry has revealed. The migrant workers had handed their passports to the firms for processing of visas, mostly those seeking work in the Middle East. Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiqueties has today received 39 cultural heritage artefacts from Cambridge University, UK. These treasured pieces were taken by British colonial administrators, anthropologists, missionaries, and soldiers during the 1890s and early 1900s. They have been housed at Cambridge University’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for over 100 years. The artefacts, sourced from various regions in Uganda, include a head-dress made of human hair from Lango, beautifully decorated pots from Ankole, and a Lubaale vessel from Buganda.
