The government has increased the number of elders to benefit from the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) from 167,000 to 220,000, according to the Managing Director, Post Bank Uganda, Mr. Julius Kakeeto. He made the revelation during the launch of SAGE and Women’s Day celebrations in Mbale Municipality, on Sunday. Post Bank is the bank in charge of disbursing the grants to elders in Uganda. Members of Parliament have demanded the Ministry of Education and Sports promotes equitable distribution of student scholarships.According to MPs, many scholarships are awarded to students from particular parts of the country, which they attribute to decisions taken by the Central Scholarship Committee under the Ministry. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Magistrate Court yesterday remanded retired UPDF Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde to Luzira Prison on treason charges. The Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) programme will encourage international and local investors to invest in agribusinesses that source produce from smallholder farmers. The programme’s goal is to attract more investment into the Ugandan agricultural sector, boost economic growth and raise demand for Ugandan produce. The Uganda Police Force has revealed the reasons why former Security Minister Lt.Gen.Henry Tumukunde was arrested. According to the police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, Tumukunde will face treason charges over his comments regarding the icy relationship between Uganda and Rwanda. “The arrest follows his utterances in a series of radio and television interviews, which seek to foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence, fomenting and glorifying violence in general,”Enanga said.
