Concerns on the increasing public debt burden continue to dominate debate and this time, Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa has directed the Committee on National Economy to make an assessment on the country’s public debt and report back to Parliament. The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has announced the allocation of a substantial sum of 144.3 billion Shillings towards the preparations for the forthcoming National Population Census. In a press briefing held on January 29, 2024, Ramathan Goobi, the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, revealed that the funds will primarily be utilized to procure tablets that will be employed during the census. The National Identity Registration Authority (NIRA) has asked parents to give their children photocopies of their national IDs as they return to school, in order to ease the process of acquiring National Identity cards. NIRA has stated that they will reach every primary and secondary student who hasn’t already been registered. Members of Parliament have paid glowing tribute to former Dokolo Woman District Representative, the late Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal, in a special sitting dedicated to remembering her contribution.
