Patients in Kamuli District are avoiding seeking treatment at the district’s general hospital following the designation of the outpatient ward as a Covid19 isolation centre. Dr Fred Duku, the acting District Health Officer told the Parliamentary Technical Committee on Covid that ever since the services of the outpatient unit were suspended to create an isolation centre, the number of patients has dropped. “There is a lot of fear related to the Covid-19 pandemic that people have resorted to not coming to hospitals which is reducing service delivery in regards to health,” Duku said. The late diplomat has served in numerous capacities, recently as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and Ambassador to Switzerland. Africa’s progress in empowering women risks being undone if authorities’ responses to the Covid-19 crisis do not take gender issues into account. Most notably, access to funding will be critical for the survival of many small businesses; yet we know that women entrepreneurs face significantly greater obstacles than men when it comes to accessing financial services. If policymakers are not cognisant of this in their responses, including in their fiscal stimulus packages, Africa’s strides forward in financial inclusion could be reversed in the months and years ahead. Uganda has recorded eight new cases of coronavirus disease, the lowest number to be registered in a period of two months. The eight were part of 2,423 samples that were tested on Tuesday. Four of the cases were picked from points of entry while another four were from alerts in the community; two from Kyotera, one from Kayunga and one from Amuru district. The downturn in the Ugandan private sector as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continued in May, with further reductions in output, new orders and employment registered. That said, business sentiment returned to positive territory amid hopes of an improvement in activity once the pandemic subsides. The headline Purchase Managers Index (PMI) rose to 41.9 in May from the reading of 21.6 in April. Although higher than in the previous month, the figure still represented a deterioration in business conditions across the private sector. Outgoing Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza is dead. The Burundi government announced the death on Tuesday, saying the head of state had succumbed to a heart attack. “The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, at the Karusi Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital following a cardiac arrest on June 8, 2020,” the government said.
