The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has said that businesses in Uganda collapse due to unexpected events in the financial sector and has called for mergers to help them survive. Kenya’s Finance Minister Henry Rotich and other treasury officials were arrested Monday on corruption and fraud charges over a multi-million dollar project to build two mega dams, police said. Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had ordered the arrest and prosecution of Rotich and 27 other top officials on charges of fraud, abuse of office and financial misconduct in the latest scandal to rock graft-wracked Kenya. Uganda Airlines will start commercial operations in August according to the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon Monica Ntege Azuba. She said that the national carrier will start operations to Nairobi, Dar-salaam and Mogadishu. “These destinations will be operated first to orient staff and service providers on Uganda Airlines procedures and standards. Immediately after that, other destinations will be added and they include, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Bujumbura and Mombasa.,” said Ntege Azuba. Museveni was referring to recent charges of ‘Annoying the President’ that were slapped on former New Vision journalist turned evangelist Joseph Kabuleta. Government has introduced new traffic and road safety proposals intended to strengthen road transport regulation and management but will see an increase in fines and penalties for traffic offences including a 10-year jail time for death from reckless driving. Uganda National Roads Authority will this financial year return up to 4,000 land titles to persons affected by road works across the country, the head of land acquisition at UNRA, William Matovu, has said. UNRA, which keeps the titles to avoid land owners obstructing works because of their land ownership, has held some of the titles for over four years. A two months mineral drilling process has been launched in kiboga district as part of Uganda’s efforts to explore more mineral deposits especially cobalt and copper in partnership with an Australian company Jervois mining limited. The drilling process will be conducted in Kibiga Sub County 300meters deep underground until the end of August.
