The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has applauded doctors from India for bringing medical services closer to Ugandans. A team of doctors from India under Rotary International Medical Mission met Kadaga in Parliament on Tuesday, 25 June 2019 following a successful medical camp in Kampala. Attempts by legislators to get a commitment from government on when the country will produce its first oil have been futile. Oil discovery in Uganda can be traced back to as far as 1991. In 2006, activities in the oil and gas sector started, including signing of oil production sharing agreements with companies to drill oil wells and set up the necessary infrastructure. On April 29, 2017, Uganda Telecom (UTL), the country’s first telecommunication operator was placed under receivership after failing to meet its financial obligations. According to a 2018 Cabinet memorandum, UTL’s total liability stood at $147m (Over Shs550bn). From this $147m debt, government owned $53.61m, NSSF-$2.84m, ESATD/PTA Bank-$8.91m, UCECPS-$3.34m and $77.86m for Others. Members of Parliament have decried what they regard as laxity in Kampala Capital City Authority’s (KCCA) approach towards managing the torrential floods in Kampala.
