Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, has given the Budget Committee of Parliament up to Friday, 31 February 2020 to present its report on the Budget Framework Paper for consideration and approval. Oulanyah said that the Budget Committee and Parliament must consider the budgeting process within the timelines set out in the House Rules and the Public Finance Management Act. “We are in the budget process. Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah has dismissed reports that circulated on social media in December 2019 claiming he was battling an illness out of the country. “I am well as you can see; I have not fallen sick but probably I will fall sick in future; I do not have an issue as yet,” he said at the start of the plenary sitting on Tuesday, 28 January 2020. Legislators have rejected a proposal by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to cut the Electoral Commission’s (EC) budget for the 2021 general elections. The Minister of Finance, Hon Matia Kasaija told MPs on the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs on 28 January 2020 that the EC’s budget for the elections will be reviewed due to constraints in the treasury. Parliament has paid tribute to Amina Hersi Morghe, a Kenyan business woman who has invested heavily in Uganda. The parliamentary mention follows her recent receipt of an award, ‘Entrepreneur of the Year Africa 2019’ by European CEO Magazine. Parliament praised Hersi referring to her as a true East African, not only for winning the award but for persistently investing in Uganda and Kenya despite being of Somali origin. Former Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant has died after the helicopter he was in crashed on a hillside in the Calabasas area on Sunday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported. Bryant was reportedly in his private helicopter with three other people when it crashed. No one on board the helicopter survived, according to TMZ Sports. TMZ first reported that Bryant died in the crash. Vanessa Bryant was not on the helicopter, according to TMZ. The 41-year-old athlete was one of five occupants who did not survive the fiery incident in the 4200 block of Las Virgenes Road. Authorities have not publicly confirmed his death.

Burundi’s governing party has said Secretary-General Evariste Ndayishimiye will be its candidate in the country’s presidential election scheduled for May. The announcement by the CNDD-FDD party on Sunday came at an extraordinary congress attended by President Pierre Nkurunziza An ally of Nkurunziza, 52-year-old Ndayishimiye also heads the department of military affairs in the president’s office and has served as minister of the interior and security. Fred Kajoba has today been unveiled as the new Vipers Football Club head coach. Kajoba who will be deputised by Ibrahim Mugisha replaces Edward Golola who was relieved of his duties on Thursday. Golola was sacked together with his entire technical team. “The club would like to thank Golola and his team for their work during their time at Vipers SC and to wish them success in the future,” reads a statement posted on the club’s website. Supreme Court Judge Wilson Kanyeheimba on Friday evening threw a thanks giving dinner that saw different close friends share a meal together. This was aimed at celebrating and thanking God for enabling the highly hailed counsel to survive the deadly illness that narrowly claimed his life.
