The salaries for South Sudan’s army, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), have not been paid for at least two months, Radio Tamazuj has learned. SPLA troops have been fighting against opposition groups since 2013. For his part, the SPLA deputy military spokesman, Santo Domic confirmed that the government forces have gone unpaid since February, while attributing the problem to the current economic crisis and budget deficit. “This is problem is not for the SPLA only, it is actually a general problem, because since the start of the rebellion our economy has started deteriorating,” said Domic. Mathew Kanyamunyu, prime suspect in the murder of Akena, has appealed against High Court’s decision to deny him bail. Through Alaka and Company Advocates, Kanyamunyu says he is dissatisfied with part of the High Court ruling and wants Court of Appeal to review it. On March 28, 2017, Justice Yasin Nyanzi denied Kanyamunyu bail saying there was no guarantee that he would not interfere with witnesses. The judge also ruled that it was the court’s duty to balance Kanyamunyu’s constitutional right to get bail on the presumption of innocence, and to protect the society from lawlessness.

Former presidential aspirant Dr. Kiiza Besigye has again dodged police in Toroma as it tried to stop him from checking on the people who were injured during the scuffle between police and his supporters. Congolese President Jospeh Kabila has just wrapped up a wide-ranging speech to MPs in the capital Kinshasa. On the political front, he said that he will name a new prime minister in the next 48 hours, a post which is to be held by an opposition member as part of a deal brokered by the Catholic church.
