Dibango – best known for his 1972 hit Soul Makossa – is one of the first global stars to die from Covid-19. The 86-year-old fused jazz and funk music with traditional sounds from his home country, Cameroon. He collaborated with numerous artists over a long career, including US pianist Herbie Hancock and Nigeria’s Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. “The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25PM at the age of 81,” the family said via twitter on Saturday. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.” Rogers, was known for hits like “The Gambler”, a cross-over hit that won him a Grammy award in 1980. The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Andrew Kitaka has admitted that the Authority wrongfully made contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for some top staff who are entitled to gratuity.
