The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Betty Aol Ocan, has condemned the way rioting Makerere University students are being handled by security forces, arguing that the harassment and intimidation by the forces is unnecessary. The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has called on Government to step up efforts to curb trafficking of persons within and out of the country, especially those seeking employment opportunities. Kadaga said that there is a gap in response to victims of trafficking, which has caused deficiency in combating the vice that remains etched within systems in the country. “That is why Government needs to urgently follow up on signed protocols that act against trafficking in persons. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has advised legislators from Somalia to enforce Parliamentary rules and procedures, arguing that this is one sure way of preserving the dignity of the legislature. The Uganda Plastics Manufacturers and Recyclers Association has blamed Karamoja Affairs Minister, John Byabagambi, for promoting the total ban of plastics or kaveera, a move they said is intended to drive them out of business.
