The opposition JEEMA president and city lawyer Asuman Basalirwa has said that the current Land probe chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire is not being viable to solve the land dispute. Rwandans living in Uganda have turned up in big numbers to vote for the president of their choice at the Rwanda High commission at Nakayima road in Kitante ahead of the general polls tomorrow. Voters have come from different corners of the country and voting is apparently underway. The anti-corruption court in Kololo yesterday remanded the former Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Managing Director, Mr Paul Kihika on charges of embezzlement and causing financial loss of about Shs. 33 million to the organisation. The charges were read to Mr Kihika 40, by Grade One Magistrate Ms Pamella Lamunu though he denied the charges. The Magistrate explained to Mr Kihika his right to bail but he had no lawyer or anyone to stand surety for him and in that regard he was remanded to Luzira Prison until August 7, 2017. The land commission of inquiry has summoned Justice and constitutional affairs minister, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire for fraudulently selling off government land. The team led by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, Kahinda is expected to be grilled about the government property located on plots 60-62 Aldina Road in Jinja that was allegedly sold off to Movit boss, Simpson Birungi fraudulently/irregularly. The property is has since 1967 been occupied by 10 traders of Aldina Twegayise traders Union but was in 2014 sold to Birugi at only 2.3 million shillings.

Three female candidates vying for South Sudan’s representation to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) have been elected unopposed today. Those elected unopposed include Ann Itto, Gai Nhial Deng Nhial from the ruling SPLM party led by President Kiir and Wudo Jeremiah Odok, an independent candidate. Their victory was ensured as they were lone female candidates for the post. Human Rights Watch proposed in a report released on Tuesday that nine men, including President Salva Kiir, former Vice President turned rebel leader Riek Machar, and seven other commanders, should face sanctions in view of the mounting evidence of their responsibility for grave violations during the conflict in South Sudan.
