The Chairperson of the Local Government Accounts Committee, Hon. Reagan Okumu, says district officials who do not provide proper accountability risk losing their jobs. Okumu said that as a Committee, they are going to intensify the fight against graft and embezzlement of public funds, which is rampant in local governments. “I am warning all accounting officers that this Committee will give recommendations to the Ministry of Finance to get rid of accounting officers who cannot properly account for government funds,” he said. Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe lavished his sister-in-law with $60,000 on her birthday, state-owned media reported Monday, at a time when the country is running critically short of cash. The Herald newspaper said Mugabe, 93, and his wife Grace gave Junior Gumbochuma the money at her birthday celebrations, while the couple’s children gave her $10,000. “The gift was to thank Mrs Gumbochuma, a pastor, for the pivotal role she played in raising the First Family’s children,” the newspaper said. The Ruhinda legislator Hon. Donozio Kahonda has to spend 3 more days in jail after Jinja high court adjourned his bail application session. Jinja High Court Judge Eva Luswata was on Monday 24th July expected to preside over Kahonda’s bail application. Hon. Kahonda’s bail application flopped last week following prosecutor’s strike which paralyzed court activities. High court judge Margret Oguli-Oumo has ordered that the 19 people arrested in connection to the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi be immediately subjected to an independent medical examination.
