The wife of a village chairperson in Kumi District has committed suicide, with reports indicating that her husband denied her sex and material care. Stella Atai, 50, the wife of Mr Simon Akol, the chairperson of Oswapai Village in Atutur Sub-county, took her life on Tuesday. Parliament has approved a government request to borrow US$104 million from Standard Chartered Bank to finance the national CCTV network expansion project. The Minister of State for Finance (Planning), Hon. David Bahati, said that the requirement follows a decision taken by the government in the wake of increased crime rate, to install cameras on the main streets throughout the country in a phased manner. Parliament has approved a recommendation to provide up to Shs 18.5 billion to complete the revamping of the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) and enable it fulfil its mandate as the national broadcaster. The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has sympathized with the families that lost lives during Monday’s fierce hailstorm in Kamuli and Buyende, and appealed to local leaders to spearhead replanting of trees to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
