Ex-MP Tony Kipoi Fails to Turn up in Court, Denied Jail

Jailed former Member of Parliament for Bubulo West in Buduuda District; Tonny Kipoi Nsubuga has on Monday been denied bail by High Court judge Jane Frances Abodo.

Kipoi, who failed to show up for a scheduled bail hearing in the high court this morning, also did not produce any communication from the army court-martial, where he was initially charged. Kipoi, who is currently on remand at the Makindye Military Prison, had applied for bail pending trial in the General Court Martial.

In his plea, Kipoi maintained that he was being detained illegally at the military facility and was also constitutionally entitled to bail.

However, Justice Abodo dismissed Kipoi’s application on grounds that he is charged with grave offences, related to security before the General Court Martial, which has jurisdiction to hear his bail application.

Kipoi had previously skipped bail, after being charged in the army court-martial, and was finally re-arrested in Botswana in 2014, from where he was extradited last year.
