Mbarara Grade one Magistrate Sanyu Mukasa has granted bail to three youth activists who early this month staged a mock funeral for President Yoweri Museveni. Each of the three activists was bonded for 1.5 million shillings cash while their sureties were each bonded for 1 million shillings non cash. The hearing of the case will resume on the August 11, 2017. Members of Parliament have expressed dissatisfaction over the poor pay for medical workers in the country. They noted that poor remuneration of medical personnel had been resounding for long without any major government intervention. This followed a petition to the House from the Uganda Medical Association over the poor remuneration of medical workers. The petition was presented by Hon. Christine Mutambi (Mbarara). Rights group Amnesty International released a new report on Monday which found sexual violence in the world’s newest country was rampant and torture perpetrated by South Sudan’s government and the opposition. Amnesty’s report said that thousands of South Sudanese people have been raped in ethnically-charged sexual attacks in the ongoing conflict, and are now battling mental distress and stigma with nowhere to turn for help. Zimbabwe’s parliament has amended the country’s constitution to empower the president to handpick the southern African nation’s top judges. Plans to give President Robert Mugabe such power started early this year when the then-chief justice left the bench after reaching the age of retirement. South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Tuesday convened an emergency meeting over the recent rise in fuel prices in the country, ordering a security campaign to crackdown on street vendors. South Sudan is an oil-producing country, but it doesn’t have refineries so the government subsidizes imported fuel. The Chief Justice, Hon.Justice Bart M. Katureebe, appointed a 14 member committee chaired by the Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine, to review and make proposals on amending Civil Procedure Rules. A group of youth calling itself South Sudan Young Leaders Forum (SSYLF) has issued a statement rejecting current efforts placing Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) at the centre of revitalization processes of the peace agreement, describing it as not credible.
