A campaign recently launched by Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Amelia Kyambadde to lure more Ugandans to consume locally produced goods continues to generate debate. Critics of the campaign argue that it was based on false assumptions. Dubbed “Buy Uganda-Build Uganda (BUBU)”, the campaign is part of the ministry’s efforts to implement the 2014 Buy Uganda policy and correcting trade imbalances. The policy was premised on similar campaigns in Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa and Malawi among others. Local leaders of Kagoma County in Jinja district have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, proposing the separation of the County so as to create a new constituency. The leaders who were headed by Mr Alex Brandon Kintu said Kagoma County was too large to be covered by one MP. They said that locals complained of being marginalized and poor service delivery. “Kagoma is so large with over 230,000 voters; during the President’s visit he suggested that we seek the creation of a new constituency in Kagoma,” said Mr Kintu. Experienced Margaret Kubingi,Owek. Bagunywa Florence Nkalubo and Fraidah Bulega have been elected unopposed to represent women football interests in the FUFA Assembly. Kubingi was also voted as the Chairperson of the Uganda Women Football Association (UWFA). Today’s elections concluded the line-up of the 88 delegates to the FUFA Assembly. Ugandan activist Frank Gashumba has blasted the Uganda Revenue Authority boss for holding what he described as unnecessary and useless seminars workshop. Ugandan women have no opportunity to report cases of discrimination to the United Nations since the country has not acceded to the additional Protocol on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The additional Protocol, which came into effect in 1999, gives individuals and groups of women the right to complain to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women about violations of the CEDAW.
