UPC’s Akena heckled in Lira over constitutional amendment

UPC party President Hon. Jimmy Akena

Lira Municipality Member of Parliament Jimmy Akena Obote has today been booed and heckled at Uganda Technical College, Lira Town.

This follows the move by Lango Parliamentary Group to seek views of the people on the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2017.

The Uganda People’s Congress party president took double stands and failed to articulate his stand an issue that provoked locals who even wanted to pull the microphone from him.

It should be noted that Hon. Jimmy Akena is the son of former President Late Apollo Milton Obote and also doubles as the husband of Hon. Betty Amongi one of the opposition legislators who was rewarded with a ministerial post by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in 2016.

Hon. Betty Amongi, the State Minister for Lands is the face behind the government’s proposal to amend Article 26 of the 1995 Constitution to facilitate faster land acquisition for public infrastructure one of the bills that have annoyed the general public to an extend of even splitting the ruling party Members.

The Amendment seeks to among other things provide for compulsory acquisition of private land by government without prior compensation of the owner.
