South Sudan judges call off strike to enable talks with presidency

South Sudan judges said they have called off their intended strike today over ongoing negotiations with the presidency to address their grievances.

The judges said in a statement to reporters in Juba that they believed it was prudent to call off the strike to enable talks to proceed.

“Due to continuing negotiations with the presidency, we the justices and judges in our general assembly meeting, have decided to postpone our open-ended strike across the country with effect from Monday, April 24 until Monday,  May 1,” said Khalid Mohammed Abdalla, the chairperson of South Sudan justices and judges ’ committee.

Last week, the judges served notice to withdraw their services beginning from today if issues concerning better working conditions, an increase in salaries and the reinstatement of leave benefits were not addressed.
