The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has applauded Plan International Uganda for supporting children and communities through charity work in Uganda.
The Speaker was officiating at the silver jubilee breakfast meeting of Plan International – Uganda held at Serena Conference Centre on Wednesday 10th May, 2017.
Kadaga expressed her gratitude towards Plan International for supporting communities through building schools, constructing boreholes and helping to set up village saving groups and start-up programmes for the youth.
“When Plan Uganda came to Kamuli District, I was happy to receive them. It is impossible to miss their impact on the community; there are schools everywhere marked ‘Plan Uganda’,” Kadaga said.
She further added that Plan International – Uganda has been instrumental in supporting the commemoration of the Day of the African Child and seeing to it that children’s rights are protected.
Kadaga said, “During my most recent visit to Dubai, I had a chance to interface with a foundation called Dubai Cares. I was told me that it supports Plan International – Uganda and I asked them to increase their support towards the organisation because they have made a big impact in our society.”
As a beneficiary of Plan International – Uganda, Jerry Ssesanga attributed his success in life towards the organisation adding that he would not be what he is today if it was not for Plan International – Uganda.
“One of Plan’s goals is to transform the lives of children and help them realise their full potential. At 23 years of age, I can say that I have achieved my potential and published over 20 books with major publishers all because of Plan International; they have transformed me from the helpless person and orphaned person that I was,” Ssesanga added.
The Country Director of Plan International, Rashid Javed said that Plan International was set up to protect the plight of children and their rights. He further attributed the organisation’s success in Uganda to the collaboration from key partners like the government and other NGOs.
“With all the support we get, we have been able to reach different parts of the country including West Nile, Lira, Luweero, Kamuli, Tororo and we plan to spread further into the country. This has seen us impact on the lives of six million children,” Javed said.
In addition, Javed thanked the Speaker for not only being a voice of Uganda but being a champion of children’s rights.
Plan International – Uganda has been operating since 1992 with its key priorities being; promoting primary education, water and sanitation and child protection. The organisation is also celebrating 80 years of existence internationally.
