President Museveni Set to Officiate 9th Oil and Gas Convention

The 9th Edition of the Oil and Gas Convention is happening next week from April 17-18 at Kampala Serena Hotel. The Chief Guest at the Convention is President Yoweri Museveni.

The Convention is orgnaised by Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum (UCMP) together with the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development, Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), and Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU).

It is organized under the theme “The Journey To First Oil In The Face Of A Just Energy Transition In Uganda.”

The main objectives of the Convention are; to offer a platform for industry stakeholders to provide updates on projects within the oil and gas sector; to provide a platform for an expansive exhibition of goods and services linked to the oil and gas sector; to provide a platform for sharing knowledge related to the diverse value chains within the sector and to foster business collaboration and networking through engagements in the realm of business-to-business interactions.

The theme reflects the ongoing global discourse on energy transition and emphasizes the importance of adopting the best environmental and social governance practices. There shall be a high-level discussion on energy transition.

The Convention will create opportunities for both domestic and international players and will bring together key policymakers, business leaders, bankers, academia, investors, students, and more.

The 2-day discussions will be aligned to the theme – focusing on available opportunities in awarded contracts and those yet to be awarded across various projects. Additionally, there will be space for sharing experiences regarding emerging sector challenges and strategies to overcome them.

We expect to have over 50 exhibitors and over 600 national and international delegates during the two days.

Exhibitors will feature products and services offered by industry participants. Exhibitors span sectors such as oil and gas exploration and production, labor skilling and entrepreneurship, insurance, finance, logistics and transport, hospitality and tourism, Quality Health Safety Security & Environment (QHSSE), engineering and construction, manufacturing, media and communications, energy, and more.

Looking back to February 2022, when the Final Investment Decision (FID) was reached, the projection was for players to spend between US$15-20 billion in the sector’s development stage before oil production or FIRST OIL is seen.

Significant progress has been registered so far in the area of National Content—regarding investments, jobs, and related opportunities. We expect a detailed update on all these areas during the Convention.

We also expect to get an update on oil drilling at Kingfisher and Tilenga; progress on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), and the Oil Refinery project among others.

Throughout the two days, the Convention will feature panel discussions, an exhibition of goods and services, business-to-business engagements, and other networking discussions.

Some of the other unique activities during the Convention include;

A 2-day Exclusive Top Industry Executives Tour of the Albertine Graben, providing an opportunity to visit Kingfisher and Tilenga Oilfields for firsthand information and experience.

We shall host the 2nd Uganda-Tanzania Oil and Gas Symposium where sector opportunities and challenges will be discussed.

We shall also witness the signing of two MoUs between Uganda Chamber of Mines & Petroleum and the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU); the other will be between UCMP and Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU). The two MoUs aim to harness the working relationship among the signing entities.

We shall announce the winners of the 20 under 40 Women in Energy, Oil and Gas Edition. These have been managed by ourselves and the Women in Energy and Extractives Network (WEEN).

We shall also announce the winners of the Essay Competition that we commissioned among the students from the higher institutions of learning as part of the Junior Uganda Chamber of Mines & Petroleum (UJCMP).
