An eight-year-old girl has died in Rubanda district after mudslides hit the house she was in on Tuesday morning.
The deceased only identified as Promise, a daughter to Didas Kanyesigye a resident of Rutooma village, Kacherere ward, Kacherere town council was a primary two pupil at Kacherere primary school met her death at around 05:00 AM.
Principal Ayinamaani Twijukye, her uncle, says that Promise was sleeping in a house when the heavy downpour started at around 03:00 AM. Ayinamaani says that at around 05:00 AM, mudslides destroyed the house which got covered under mud and rubble.
According to Ayinamaani, Promise’s body was discovered at around 10: AM as locals used hoes and spades to clear rubbles and mud.
By press time, authorities were yet to release a statement. Several areas in the Kigezi region were also still experiencing heavy precipitation.
This is not the first death by mudslides in Rubanda district. In May 2023, the mudslides in the district claimed the life of Trust Nabaasa, a resident of Nyamirima village, Kyokyezo parish, Nyamweru sub-county, and Judith Gomoshabe, from Karambo village in Muko sub-county.
In September same year, mudslides and running waters ravaged Nshanjare town council and left three people injured.
