A group of concerned citizens donning Makerere University red uniform have stormed parliament demonstrating against the social media tax but however ended up engaging in battles with police. Telecommunications companies (MTN, Airtel and Africell) announced in a joint statement that the effective July 1, 2018, internet users would have to pay Shs 200/daily, Shs 1400 a week or Shs 6,000 a month in order to access social media platforms. Opposition legislators have visited prisons in Mbarara, where inmates complained of torture before they are charged in courts and the long periods spent on remand. Opposition MPs were led by the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Lawyers from Muwema and Company Advocates are preparing to privately prosecute the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Justice Mike Chibita and former police chief Gen. Parliament has said that it’s willing to pay all the costs and the additional bills for Mukono municipality MP Betty Nambooze’s treatment abroad and therefore asks the public to stop accusing it for its failure to support the lawmaker. Geoffrey Kalele a resident of Namutumba District has been arrested for allegedly operating a Facebook account in the names of the IGP. The CID spokeman, Vincent Ssekate said that Kalele opened up a facebook account in the names Martin Okoth Ochola between March and June and has been using it to defraud the public. Kalele also has been using the fake account to give orders to officers and some unsuspecting officers would follow them.
