MTN Uganda has taken this year’s Eastern region race to Soroti in a bid to give it greater reach. The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has presented documents to Parliament showing rightful ownership of Njeru Stock Farm. The farm, located in Njeru Municipality is also claimed by Government of Uganda. Reading from the documents, Otafiire said the land in question was purchased from the late Kato Fredrick Lukwajju and Christopher Lule, who were administrators of the estate of the late Enock Ssebowa and Gusta Sseruro respectively. Parliament has passed a motion, directing the Committee on Education and Sports to investigate the crisis at Makerere University and report back by 13 November 2019. The motion was moved by the education shadow minister, Mathias Mpuuga summarising MPs responses to the education minister’s statement on the Makerere fracas. The directive issued by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga requires the committee to carry out investigations guided by seven recommendations contained in the motion. Intern doctors under the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) have implored Parliament to help address a host of grievances affecting their work. The interns, who appeared before the House Committee on Health said that although they were fully fledged doctors offering frontline services in health facilities, they remained the worst paid in the region. “We receive the least salary compared to our counterparts in East Africa such as Kenya where they earn a net pay of Shs5.5 million,” said Dr. Herbert Luswata, an intern at Kawempe Referral Hospital. As you are all aware on the 22/10/2019, police and sister security agencies intercepted 12 female students from the main Gate at Makerere University while rallying other students to join them and march to Parliament, in protest against the fees policy. The policy was approved, following a report by a special Committee of Guild Representatives that recommended for a 15% increment on all Undergraduate programs, in the Academic year 2018/2019. Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah, has commended efforts made by Lalogi Health Centre IV to bring down the number of maternal deaths in Omoro district to zero in 2018. Oulanyah says the new statistics are attributed to committed health workers at the health centre and the improving early response of community members, which brings more hope of good maternal health for the district and the country at large. “This means Uganda has the potential of bringing maternal deaths to zero across the country’s health centres, because this has been illustrated in one district,” said Oulanyah. Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree of law by Nkumba University. This was during the University’s 22nd graduation ceremony held under the theme: 25 years of academic excellence and professionalism’ at Nkumba University campus on Saturday 26 October, 2019.
