“The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25PM at the age of 81,” the family said via twitter on Saturday.
“Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.”
Rogers, was known for hits like “The Gambler”, a cross-over hit that won him a Grammy award in 1980.
The song was later selected in 2018 for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
Rogers would develop the Gambler persona into a character for a successful series of television films.
Rogers charted more than 120 hit singles across various music genres which included “the coward of the county” which topped the country and pop album charts for more than 200 individual weeks in the United States alone, and sold over 100 million records worldwide.
On September 25, 2015, Rogers announced on NBC’s that he was retiring from show business after a final tour to spend more time with his wife and twin sons.
Rogers, was a country music hall of fame member, six-time CMA awards winner, three-time grammy award winner.
He was married five times and had five children.
